The Lazy Cook's Guide to a Well-Stocked Pantry 🥫🌿

The Lazy Cook's Guide to a Well-Stocked Pantry 🥫🌿

Let's be honest.

Not everyone loves cooking.

Some people happily spend a Sunday afternoon chopping, stirring, simmering and experimenting in the kitchen.

And some of us would rather spend that time doing literally anything else. 😂

I'm firmly in the second camp.

I don't hate food. In fact, I love good food. I just don't want to spend hours preparing it.

That's why I believe a well-stocked pantry can be your best friend.

When you have the right basics on hand, you don't need a complicated meal plan or a fridge full of fresh ingredients. You need a few versatile staples, a handful of good flavours and a willingness to throw things together.

And that's where NutriSource Pantry comes in. ❤️

🛒 What actually makes a good pantry?

A good pantry isn't one that's packed with dozens of ingredients you've forgotten you bought.

It's one where the things you have are useful, versatile and regularly eaten.

My ideal pantry contains five basic building blocks:

🫘 1. Legumes

Dried beans, lentils, chickpeas and other legumes are some of the hardest-working ingredients you can have in your pantry.

They're affordable, filling and incredibly versatile.

You can add them to:

  • Soups

  • Curries

  • Chilli

  • Salads

  • Wraps

  • Rice dishes

  • Stews

  • Grain bowls

And here's my favourite lazy-cook trick:

Cook a big batch and freeze it in portions.

You do the work once, then you've got ready-to-use beans for several meals.

🌾 2. Grains

You don't need ten different types of grains.

Just keep a few that you actually enjoy eating.

Rice is an obvious pantry staple, but don't overlook bulgur wheat, couscous and quinoa.

Bulgur wheat is particularly useful because it's quick to prepare and makes a lovely alternative to rice or couscous.

Cook up a batch and use it throughout the week with:

🥗 roasted vegetables
🍗 chicken
🫘 beans
🥬 salads
🌿 herbs and spices

Suddenly you've got the basis of a meal without starting from scratch every night.

🌿 3. Good spice blends

Now we're getting to my favourite part.

Spices are the lazy cook's secret weapon.

You can have the simplest ingredients in the world, but add the right seasoning and suddenly dinner tastes like you've made an effort.

This is exactly why we love the Spice Farm blends at NutriSource.

Take our Bagel Love blend.

Chicken + vegetables + Bagel Love = delicious.

Eggs + Bagel Love = delicious.

Avocado toast + Bagel Love = delicious.

Potatoes + Bagel Love = delicious.

And our Tomato blend is another incredibly useful addition to the spice cupboard.

One of my favourite quick meals combines the two.

🌯 The 10-minute dinner that saves me from cooking

Dice two chicken fillets and stir-fry them in a little macadamia oil.

Add a packet of rainbow slaw and some fresh coriander.

Then comes the magic:

1 heaped tablespoon of Bagel Love

and

1 heaped teaspoon of Tomato

Give everything a final stir.

That's it.

Serve it in wraps with grated cheese, mayonnaise and chilli.

Or serve it with rice, couscous, bulgur wheat or quinoa.

Dinner in less than 10 minutes.

And when my husband asks for seconds, I know I've found a winner. 😂

🥜 4. Seeds, nuts & pantry boosters

A few simple additions can make everyday meals more interesting.

Think:

  • Chia seeds

  • Nuts

  • Seeds

  • Cacao

  • Coconut

  • Psyllium husk

These aren't necessarily ingredients you need to use every day, but they're useful to have available when you want to add something extra to breakfast, baking, smoothies or snacks.

And that's the point of a good pantry:

you have options.

🧂 5. The little things that make a big difference

A few other pantry staples can turn basic ingredients into completely different meals.

Things like:

  • Good quality oils

  • Herbs and spices

  • Flour

  • Coconut

  • Stock

  • Seeds

  • Dried fruit

  • Baking ingredients

You don't need to own every ingredient under the sun.

Instead, build your pantry around the foods your family actually eats.

🤔 What if I don't know what to make?

This is where a stocked pantry really earns its keep.

Instead of thinking:

"What recipe am I going to make tonight?"

try asking:

"What do I already have?"

Maybe you've got:

Chicken + bulgur wheat + vegetables + spices

→ Grain bowl.

Or:

Beans + mince + tomato + spices

→ Chilli.

Or:

Chickpeas + vegetables + curry spices

→ Quick curry.

Or:

Eggs + vegetables + spice blend

→ Breakfast-for-dinner.

You don't always need a recipe.

Sometimes you just need good ingredients that work together.

💡 The NutriSource "Lazy Cook" Rule

Here's my personal rule:

If an ingredient can be used in at least five different meals, it's pantry-worthy.

That's why we love things like dried legumes, grains and spice blends.

They don't sit forgotten at the back of the cupboard.

They become the building blocks of meals.

🌿 Build a pantry that works for YOU

You don't have to completely overhaul your kitchen.

Start small.

Choose:

2–3 legumes
2–3 grains
5–6 favourite spices or blends
A few seeds and nuts
Your everyday cooking and baking basics

Then build from there.

The goal isn't to have the biggest pantry.

It's to have a pantry that makes your life easier.

Because if you can open the cupboard at 5:30pm, see a handful of ingredients and think:

"I can make something with that."

…then your pantry is doing its job. ❤️
