Dried Beans vs Canned Beans: Which Is Really Cheaper? 💰🫘

If you're trying to make your grocery budget stretch a little further, there is one humble pantry staple worth looking at more closely: dried beans.

Beans are affordable, filling, versatile and a great pantry staple. But when you're standing in the supermarket looking at a bag of dried beans next to a tin of ready-to-eat beans, the canned option can seem like the obvious choice.

It's convenient. It's ready to use. And you don't have to remember to soak anything.

But there's a catch...

You're paying quite a bit more for that convenience.

At NutriSource Pantry, we're big believers in finding simple ways to save money without compromising on good food. And dried legumes are one of our favourite little pantry money-savers.

🫘 Let's do the maths

Take our 1kg bag of dried Haricot Beans, for example.

At NutriSource Pantry, 1kg costs just R60.

A 1kg bag of dried beans can produce a surprisingly large amount of cooked beans once prepared.

For comparison, you might need around 6–8 cans of beans to get a similar quantity of cooked beans.

If you were paying approximately R20 per can, that could cost you:

6 cans × R20 = R120

Or:

8 cans × R20 = R160

Compared with:

1kg dried beans = R60

That's a potential saving of R60–R100.

And that's exactly the sort of saving that adds up over a month.

But aren't dried beans a lot of work?

This is probably the biggest reason people reach for canned beans.

And honestly?

They do require a little more planning.

But they don't require much hands-on work.

Here's our favourite method:

1. Soak

Put your dried beans into a large bowl and cover generously with water.

Leave them to soak overnight.

2. Cook

Drain and rinse the beans, then cook them in fresh water until tender.

You can do this on the stovetop or use a pressure cooker if you have one.

3. Portion

Once cooked and cooled, divide them into portions.

4. Freeze

Pop the portions into freezer-safe containers or bags and freeze.

And now you've got your very own ready-to-use beans whenever you need them.

That's the bit that makes the whole process worthwhile.

You do the work once, and then you've got beans ready for multiple meals.

🧊 The freezer is your secret weapon

This is one of our favourite pantry hacks.

Instead of cooking a small amount every time you need beans, cook a whole batch.

Then freeze them in quantities that suit the way your family eats.

Need beans for dinner?

Take a portion out.

Making soup?

Grab a portion.

Making a salad?

You've got beans ready to go.

Making chilli?

Straight from the freezer.

It turns dried beans from something that feels like "extra work" into a convenient homemade pantry staple.

🌮 What can you actually do with dried beans?

More than you might think!

Beans are incredibly versatile and can be used in:

  • 🌶️ Chilli con carne

  • 🥗 Salads

  • 🍲 Soups and stews

  • 🌯 Wraps and burritos

  • 🍛 Curries

  • 🍝 Pasta dishes

  • 🥣 Grain bowls

  • 🫘 Homemade bean dips

  • 🥔 Loaded baked potatoes

And don't limit yourself to Haricot Beans.

All legumes are worth having in your pantry.

Lentils, chickpeas, kidney beans, black beans, butter beans and other dried legumes are affordable pantry staples that can be used to bulk up meals and make your grocery budget work harder.

💰 Why we love legumes at NutriSource

For us, it's not simply about selling another bag of beans.

It's about helping you get more value from the food you buy.

A well-stocked pantry can make a huge difference to your grocery bill.

When you have affordable staples like:

legumes + grains + spices + seeds + flours

you have the building blocks for countless meals.

And you don't need an elaborate recipe every night.

Sometimes it's simply:

Cooked beans + rice + vegetables + a good spice blend = dinner.

That's the kind of everyday cooking we love.

🛒 Ready to make your grocery budget work harder?
